January 2, 2017 day 2 – 42 Flash 2017 edition

There are times we think we know where everything is – and there are times when we learn that we were very, very wrong.  Sometimes though… it’s a pleasant surprise.

Today’s Prompt: Unexpected returns.

  1. Benny groaned and tried to block the sunlight with his hands, but all it did was making him want to crawl back into whatever bottle he’d surfaced from. It was obvious he’d been in there either too long or not nearly enough.

His throat felt as if he’d swallowed a belt sander and judging by the grit in his eyes, he was fairly certain he hadn’t been wearing safety goggles when he’d done it.

“What the…” he groaned as his bed shifted and then righted itself.

“Easy there, son,” he heard a gentle voice urge as he felt something cool placed over his eyes. “Just rest.”

Reflexively he reached for the cloth, only to feel someone pull his hands away. “Ain’t nothing worth seeing here…”

He tried to think, tried to remember where he was, but all he remembered was the sound of screaming metal filling up the night until it rushed over him like so much smoke.

“What happened?” he managed to rasp, but the voice simply sighed. “I’ve asked that before, didn’t I?”

Everything seemed to have that sense of deja vu, but something told him he had been through this several times now judging by his companion’s tone.

He heard his companion shift and then the bed lurched again. “What….”

This time his companion put a hand over his mouth.

Benny could sense some sort of dread that simply warning and for once kept his mouth shut… it was the smartest thing he’d ever done.

(I’m not sure where this one is going -It seems more of a character exploration than anything else… so I will leave this hear for now)

    Happy writing!
