It’s funny. I’ve been feeling bad about not writing for most of these posts, never thinking about the fact that I’m writing these posts. At the end of the day – I’ve written… okay, I’m writing in advance, because trust me, I’m not this clever at midnight.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these prompts and that they’ve helped you… or at the very least entertained you.
Today’s Prompt: A writer rarely appreciates how they affect others, they’re too busy telling their story.
Penultimate. You know for the longest time I thought Pen was like an uber ultimate… a big ultimate… like infinity plus 1, infinity squared. I’d used it that way for a long, long time until I found out… that it is actually ultimate – 1.
I’ve recently been told that correcting people is wrong and some sort of effort to make myself feel superior, but to be honest… I wish someone had told me sooner. Instead I get to wonder just how long I’ve been getting it wrong, and if anyone other than me remembers.
Today’s Prompt: Do you want to know, or is ignorance the best policy?
The Oxford Comma (can we tell I’ve been engaging my inner word nerd) I recently heard it called the serial comma -and thinking about it, it makes it sound less educated and more like… someone or something that’s going around leaving a trail of dead commas in its wake.
Today’s Prompt: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but would it leave you happy, sad or laughing?
I think we’ve all heard the grammar saying, “there’s a difference between ‘let’s eat, grandma’ and ‘let’s eat grandma’ ” (And I’m pretty sure non of us believe that– but what if you were an alien – dealing with a very literal translator. Can you image the report back to their people?
Today’s Prompt: Grammatical faux pas.
Is grammar really important? Can’t we go on implication? No. Because people come from different backgrounds.. and some of us are literal minded… *looks innocent* some of us are more fluid than others and can take meaning from what is meant… but for the rest of us, the rules are what make communication possible.
Today’s Prompt: Miscommunication taken to the extreme
My dog is staring at me as I write this. It seems it is time for him to go out and I have been neglecting him. He’s a good dog… he’s a wonderful dog. He’s almost well behaved and to be hones… we have him to think for that.
Sometimes I swear that dog trained himself
Today’s Prompt: Doing what needs to be done because… it needs to be done.
So… I’m taking a Grammar course and the teacher is of the ‘don’t be afraid of Grammar’ and ‘They aren’t rules, think of them as guidelines. No, you do not say this to someone who is an editor! I’m not the greatest editor and I can’t edit my own stuff… but Harbrace, the Comma Sutra and Chicago Elements of style have something to say about all that.
The instructor (a linguist) reminds us that there are many different English Grammars and all I’m thinking is ‘Proper’ and ‘WRONG’
Today’s Prompt: Meaningless rules that actually mean something
